The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to widen the decades-old railway underpass connecting Juna Bazaar and RTO Chowk to reduce heavy traffic congestion in the area. The narrow lanes have long caused bottlenecks, especially during peak hours, making the stretch one of the most frustrating for daily commuters. The civic body will soon appoint a consultant to study traffic flow and land requirements. Officials said talks with the Railways will be initiated to acquire land and construct additional lanes or a parallel underpass to handle the growing vehicle load.
Commuters have repeatedly demanded a complete revamp, citing waterlogging, broken paver blocks, lack of footpaths, and poor turns that make the underpass unsafe. The situation worsens during the weekly Wednesday and Sunday markets, bringing vehicles to a standstill. The civic body has assured that a detailed plan will soon be prepared not just for this stretch but also for other aging underpasses across the city that date back to the colonial era.
