Pune’s Air and Rivers Suffer While Pollution Regulator Blames Tech Issues
Even as air and water pollution levels continue to worsen in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the state pollution regulator Maharashtra Pollution Control Board has cited “technical issues” for the prolonged absence of crucial public information from its official website. The ‘Legal Notice’ section has reportedly been non-functional since August 2025, while the mandatory daily Air Quality Index (AQI) data has also remained unavailable. This lack of publicly accessible data has raised serious concerns among environmental experts and activists regarding transparency, accountability, and citizens’ right to information.
Environmental groups allege that pollution norms are being routinely violated across the region, with untreated sewage being discharged into the Mula-Mutha river and industrial effluents allegedly released into drains and river stretches, often during night hours. Rising dust pollution from construction and Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants, along with increasing PM10 and PM2.5 levels, has added to public health risks. While officials claim closure notices have been issued to several non-compliant units, there is little clarity on enforcement outcomes. Experts warn that the continued absence of real-time pollution data undermines regulatory oversight and delays corrective action, even as respiratory illnesses and ecological degradation intensify.
