The recent closure of the Kothrud garbage ramp a key facility for managing nearly 300 tonnes of daily waste has begun to take a visible toll on nearby areas like Karvenagar, Paud Road, Erandwane, and Bavdhan. Since the space was handed over to the Metro authorities last month, garbage collection vehicles now have to travel longer distances to alternate disposal sites in Aundh, Ghole Road, Uruli, and Katraj. As a result, fewer trips are being made, causing delays in waste pickup. Residents are already feeling the effects, with unattended piles of trash drawing stray animals, creating foul odours, and posing a serious health risk as monsoon sets in.
Locals have raised concerns about mosquito breeding, dog menace, and the growing risk of infections. “The garbage is left lying around for too long, and it’s becoming a health hazard,” a Bavdhan resident said, urging the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to deploy more staff until a replacement site is finalized. The PMC has acknowledged the problem and is currently searching for a new location to resume operations. Officials say the ramp will be functional again in a few months once a suitable site is found. Meanwhile, waste segregation remains a challenge, with last year’s protests by collectors banned from using the ramp due to improper dumping still fresh in public memory.
