In a major boost to Pune’s public transport, the Pune Metro has announced the addition of 15 new trains comprising 45 coaches to its existing fleet. This expansion is aimed at supporting two newly approved metro corridors and easing the daily commute for thousands of passengers. Currently, Pune Metro operates 34 trains with 102 coaches, serving over 1.7 lakh commuters each day. With the new additions, the fleet will grow to 49 trains and 147 coaches, significantly enhancing capacity and reducing crowding.
Officials from Pune Metro said the move will also help bring down the frequency between trains from 7 minutes to just 5 and eventually to 3 minutes making travel quicker and more efficient. The new coaches will be rolled out over the next two years as work on the new metro lines progresses. Daily commuters are optimistic that shorter waiting times and less crowding will improve their overall travel experience, especially during rush hours. Metro authorities have also hinted at the possibility of upgrading existing three-coach trains to six-coach ones in the future to accommodate rising demand
