MSRDC Rejects Air Ambulance Plan for Pune Mumbai Expressway

27 Jan 2026

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has rejected a proposal to introduce air ambulance services for accident victims on the Pune Mumbai expressway after assessing its cost and operational feasibility. Officials stated that the estimated cost of operating an air ambulance was around ₹5 lakh per hour, making it financially unviable. The hilly and ghat terrain along the expressway also poses major challenges for helicopter landing and take off, especially during emergencies, night hours, or adverse weather conditions.

MSRDC officials clarified that the 94.5 kilometre Pune Mumbai expressway already has a strong ground level emergency response system. Four quick response team units are deployed at strategic locations and are capable of reaching accident sites within 12 minutes. These teams provide immediate medical assistance and ensure rapid transport of injured persons to hospitals. The corporation said strengthening existing emergency infrastructure and hospital coordination would be more effective than introducing an expensive aerial medical service
