Ranjangaon MIDC Pollution Case Under NGT Scanner After Villagers Raise Health Concerns

01 Feb 2026

The National Green Tribunal has formed a six-member joint inspection committee to examine allegations of environmental pollution and related health impacts in villages around Ranjangaon MIDC in Pune district. The case is linked to a hazardous waste treatment facility operated by Maharashtra Enviro Power Limited, where residents and the Nimgaon Bhogi gram panchayat have raised concerns about long-term air, water, and soil contamination. Complaints include foul odours, suspected release of hazardous gases, and discharge of polluted wastewater, which villagers say has affected both human health and livestock over several years.

The tribunal noted references to earlier reports pointing to leakage from landfill cells since 2015 and studies indicating groundwater contamination beyond the site, including areas near Pazar Talav and the Ghod river, a key water source for drinking and irrigation. Observing prima facie evidence of possible non-compliance with environmental laws, the NGT directed an independent inspection involving central and state agencies. The committee has been asked to conduct a site visit and submit a factual action-taken report within one month, with the matter scheduled for further hearing on April 2.
