The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it has taken action against 69 individuals for open garbage burning since June 2024, collecting a total of ₹3.45 lakh in fines. This comes after the NGT pulled up the civic body on July 2 for not doing enough to curb the harmful practice. In response, PMC’s solid waste management department submitted an affidavit stating that ward officers and zonal heads are regularly discussing challenges related to waste management, while quick response and tracing teams patrol known hotspots to catch violators. Each incident of open garbage burning now attracts a ₹5,000 penalty, and the PMC claims it is also conducting awareness campaigns to prevent further violations.
However, despite these enforcement efforts, a residents' group, Citizens for Area Sabha, filed a complaint in June 2025 alleging that open burning of garbage continues unabated and in some cases, even PMC staff are involved. While the NGT acknowledged the PMC’s progress, it also took serious note of the fresh complaints. In its July 25 order, the tribunal allowed the complainants to present their concerns at PMC’s monthly review meetings and said persistent violations would be treated as fresh legal cases. The tribunal urged the PMC to continue taking firm action to resolve the issue and uphold environmental safety standards in the city.
