Heavy rains over the weekend wreaked havoc across parts of Baramati and Indapur tehsils, forcing authorities to shift at least 100 families from 10 villages to safer places after floodwaters entered their homes. Baramati recorded over 130mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, and with downpours continuing, daily life came to a standstill. The situation worsened in Limtek village after a significant breach in the Nira left bank canal around 1pm on Sunday sent torrents of water into nearby homes and farmland. This canal, which stretches 160km from Veer Dam through Baramati and Purandar to Indapur, was flowing at 250 cusecs about 20% of its full capacity when the breach occurred. Authorities quickly stopped water release to control further damage.
The sudden inundation also affected the Pune-Solapur highway near Bhigwan, where 94mm of rain fell in just four hours, prompting locals to liken the downpour to a cloudburst. However, IMD clarified it didn’t meet the criteria for such classification. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed two teams to affected regions to aid in evacuation and relief. With an orange alert in place for May 26–27 and a yellow alert for May 28–29, residents remain on edge, bracing for more rain and hoping for quick recovery efforts.
