Pune Property Tax May Rise 10 Percent Amid Pending Dues Of Rs 7000 Crore

02 Feb 2026

The Pune Municipal Corporation administration has proposed a 10 percent increase in property tax to strengthen civic revenues, with the standing committee expected to take a decision in an upcoming meeting. At present, the committee comprises only civic officials due to the absence of an elected general body. The proposal comes as PMC targets Rs 2,800 crore in revenue collection for the 2025–26 financial year, against which around Rs 2,200 crore has been collected so far. Nearly 14.5 lakh properties within PMC limits are liable for property tax, with commercial properties taxed at higher rates than residential ones.

Citizens’ groups and activists have opposed the proposed hike, stating that the focus should be on recovering long-pending dues instead of burdening regular taxpayers. Civic data shows nearly Rs 7,000 crore remains unpaid due to issues like mobile tower taxes, disputed assessments, and taxes on government properties. PMC officials said recovery drives and an amnesty scheme helped collect Rs 713 crore in two months, prompting an extension of the scheme. Residents have also called for the revival of incentive schemes that previously rewarded diligent taxpayers, arguing that compliance should be encouraged rather than penalised.
