Hundreds of domestic helpers working in Pune’s Bhosalenagar face daily danger while crossing the busy Ganeshkhind Road, often paying autorickshaws just to avoid being run over. This fear turned into tragedy on November 21, when a 42-year-old domestic worker was hit by a speeding two-wheeler while crossing the road. Though initially treated for fractures and sent home, she later developed severe complications and died days after the accident. Her family suspects internal injuries were missed during the first medical examination. She is survived by her husband and two adult sons.
Residents and workers say the incident highlights long-standing neglect of pedestrian safety on Ganeshkhind Road and other arterial routes like Chandni Chowk and Nagar Road, where infrastructure upgrades prioritised vehicle movement over walkability. With speeding traffic, missing footpaths, unsafe crossings and weak enforcement, pedestrians remain vulnerable. Following the incident, residents’ groups have written to PMC and Pune Police demanding a road safety audit, raised pedestrian crossings, better lighting, traffic calming measures and continuous footpaths as per IRC norms. Locals argue that road safety on this stretch is no longer just a traffic issue, but a matter of social justice affecting the city’s most vulnerable citizens.
