Viman Nagar Traffic Experiment Brings Measurable Commute Relief

29 Dec 2025

The Pune traffic police have reported measurable improvements in travel time after introducing a one-way rotary traffic system in Viman Nagar about a month ago. Based on analysis of anonymised mobile network data, officials say average travel time on Datta Mandir Road and surrounding internal roads has reduced by nearly eight minutes. Vehicle speeds on Datta Mandir Road have increased from around 14 kmph earlier to nearly 22 kmph now, even during peak hours, despite heavy activity from malls, offices, eateries, and airport-bound traffic.

According to police officials, smoother vehicle movement has reduced traffic congestion and lowered the need for heavy on-ground traffic deployment. The roads now handle over 1,000 vehicles within minutes during morning and evening peaks without major jams. While residents and commercial establishments initially opposed the one-way system due to longer internal routes, many now acknowledge that overall travel time has reduced despite detours. Traffic police have stated that the system continues to be closely monitored and adjusted based on real-time conditions
