₹8,745-Crore Pune–Shirur Expressway Gets Green Signal

09 Oct 2025

Pune’s long-awaited Pune–Shirur elevated highway project is moving forward, with Welspun Enterprises Limited emerging as the lowest bidder at ₹8,745 crore under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The 54-km, six-lane corridor—part of the Pune–Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Highway Improvement Plan—is expected to cut travel time between Pune and Shirur from over two hours to just 45 minutes. The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) received three bids, with Adani Enterprises and GR Infraprojects trailing behind. Officials said the project aims to boost regional connectivity and ease congestion on the current Pune–Ahmednagar route.

Construction is likely to begin by mid-2026, with an estimated four-year completion timeline. The elevated highway will mostly follow the existing Pune–Ahilya Nagar alignment, reducing land acquisition needs and ensuring smoother linkage to the Samruddhi Mahamarg and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. Once complete, the project is expected to transform intercity travel and logistics between Pune and the Marathwada region, providing a major push to infrastructure and trade connectivity in western Maharashtra.
