PMC Orders Evacuation After Wall Collapse in Dhankawadi Residents Demand Proof of Instability

22 May 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has ordered the evacuation of Padmavati Nagar Society’s ‘C wing’ in Dhankawadi after a partial compound wall collapse during heavy rain on Tuesday night. Despite the directive, residents refused to vacate, demanding proof of structural instability. The PMC cited Section 268 (7) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and warned of forced evacuation with police support if necessary. A structural engineer and resident criticized the order, stating that samples had only just been collected to assess the building’s stability, and eviction before the test results is premature. Meanwhile, former and current society members blamed each other for negligence, particularly regarding illegal constructions near the compound wall.

The collapse injured no one, but a close call was reported when three children aged 6, 12, and 13 narrowly escaped harm as debris crashed into their tin shed home where they were sleeping. These sheds, housing around 15 families of vegetable vendors, had previously requested the society and PMC to reinforce the wall. Survivors blamed the housing society for inaction and demanded compensation. The PMC said a delegation from the society met officials at the civic headquarters and was instructed to begin safety measures immediately. The housing society will now be responsible for reinforcing the wall to prevent future incidents.
