Five Years After Pune Floods Ambil Odha Wall Still Incomplete Residents Fear Repeat Disaster.

23 May 2025

Five years after the devastating floods caused by the Ambil Odha breach, residents living along the canal are still waiting for the promised retaining wall that could prevent another disaster. Despite receiving ₹200 crore from the state government in 2023 for flood protection, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has built just 100 metres of the wall along one of the city’s most flood-prone canals. With heavy rains returning, residents say they live in constant fear of a repeat of 2019, when overflow from Katraj lake and a choked canal submerged housing societies, damaged over 600 vehicles, and caused widespread chaos. Locals say at least 400 metres of the wall should have been built by now, and complain that nullah cleaning has been largely ineffective, with many stretches still clogged with debris and waste.

The delay has been blamed on controversies surrounding the tender process bids came in 15–20% below the estimated cost, raising concerns about quality and leading to their cancellation. Residents and representatives allege procedural lapses and poor oversight. While PMC officials claim that 70% of nullah cleaning has been completed and that Ambil Odha’s wall will be prioritized, citizens remain skeptical. “PMC made big promises after the floods, but little has changed on the ground,” said one resident. The civic body says ward-level teams have been formed to tackle local drainage issues, but for families living near the canal, the anxiety grows with every spell of rain.
