Pune on Flood Alert as Khadakwasla Dam Releases Water Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains

20 Jun 2025

Heavy rains across Pune have triggered a flood alert for low-lying areas along the Mutha River, after the Khadakwasla dam began releasing water for the first time this monsoon. By Thursday night, the discharge had reached 15,000 cusecs as the dam’s storage exceeded 85% capacity. Lavale received the highest rainfall at 98mm, followed by Chinchwad, NDA, and other parts of the city. With the IMD issuing a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Ghat areas and a yellow warning for Pune, city officials are on high alert, especially with the Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhis scheduled to arrive.

To mitigate any flood-like situations, the PMC has deployed teams across all wards, using public address systems to alert residents in flood-prone areas such as Shivane, Sinhagad Road, Pulachiwadi, and Bopodi. Rainwater from hilly areas flooded homes in Hingne, and a large tree fell in Panchavati, damaging a car and blocking traffic. Meanwhile, the district administration has identified 72 landslide-prone villages and placed them on high alert as monsoon conditions continue to intensify across the region.
