The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has ordered an immediate halt to work on a 400-metre stretch of the Mula Riverfront Development (RFD) project near Pimple Nilakh following objections from the irrigation department, residents, and environmental activists. The civic body cited concerns over debris being dumped on the riverbed and is now seeking technical advice before proceeding. PCMC clarified that while work continues on other parts of the 9-km project, this specific section will be redesigned and paused until expert recommendations are received in the coming days. Officials from the irrigation department have repeatedly warned against reducing the river’s cross-section, which could obstruct water flow and worsen monsoon flooding.
Activists, including members of the Pune-PCMC River Revival Group and Green Army, have accused the contractor of violating environmental norms and called for the entire project to be scrapped. They argue that the river’s natural form is being altered to resemble a canal, impacting biodiversity and groundwater recharge. Despite earlier warnings, they claim PCMC only acted after multiple notices from the irrigation department. Activist Narendra Chugh emphasized the long-term consequences of such projects, warning that altering river ecosystems could have far-reaching effects on the environment and local communities.
