In response to growing complaints, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has finally warned builders and developers against illegal road digging for laying MSEDCL cables and water or drainage lines. A circular issued on June 17 by the civic road department stated that several instances of unauthorized digging were underway across the city, damaging roads and footpaths. To curb this, the PMC has announced strict action including police complaints, denial of no-objection certificates (NOCs), and halting approvals for construction if digging fees are unpaid. PMC has also urged MSEDCL not to provide power connections to violators. Civic engineers have been instructed to inspect their areas and act promptly against such illegal works.
While the move is being welcomed, citizens and activists say the action has come too late many roads have already been dug up, especially during the night without proper permissions. Residents, particularly in areas like Kothrud, feel the directives should have been issued before the monsoon, as damaged roads worsen during rains. Activists have urged the civic body to ensure that these rules are not just limited to paper, and that violators, especially those who fail to repair roads after excavation, face real consequences.
