Stalled flyovers may spark poll heat as commuters battle daily traffic jams

08 Sep 2025

Of the several flyover projects undertaken by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), only the Sinhagad Road flyover has been completed and opened for public use, while key projects at Katraj, University Chowk and Koregaon Park remain stuck in delays. With civic elections around the corner, the opposition is expected to corner the ruling party over these stalled works as commuters continue to suffer through daily traffic snarls. The most critical among them is the Katraj flyover, where land acquisition has emerged as the biggest roadblock. The six-lane project, launched in September 2021 with a budget of ₹169.15 crore, began in February 2022 and was initially set to be completed by February 2024. However, the deadline has already been pushed to December 2025.

Officials said 11 private plots at Rajas Society Chowk are crucial for completing the descending ramp of the flyover. PMC has reportedly finished the land acquisition process, and funds will soon be released to the landowners so that the land can be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is executing the project. NHAI officials clarified that most of the flyover structure is already complete, with only the landing ramp pending. Once land is handed over, the ramp could be built in three months, provided traffic is diverted to the service road. Frustrated residents of Katraj, however, said they are tired of repeated delays and false assurances. Daily traffic congestion on the Katraj-Kondhwa road continues to be a nightmare, and citizens hope that ramp construction begins soon to finally bring some relief.
