Poor-quality chamber lid repairs raise safety concerns on Pune roads

26 Feb 2026

Drainage and stormwater chamber lids on several major roads in Pune are already deteriorating, with cement around multiple covers loosening and breaking off, raising serious safety concerns for commuters. Residents and daily road users said the repairs appear shoddy and short-lived, exposing motorists to risks amid heavy traffic conditions. They have demanded immediate corrective action before the damage worsens further.

Key stretches including JM Road, FC Road, Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, Shivaji Road, Karve Road, Sus Road and University Road have reported similar issues. While commuters briefly experienced smoother road surfaces after the repairs, conditions have begun to deteriorate again with unstable chamber lids and reappearing potholes. Officials from Pune Municipal Corporation said contractors would be directed to immediately undertake corrective repairs or replace damaged lids where required, adding that chamber levelling and road maintenance work is ongoing across multiple parts of the city.
