Pune Plans Underground Road Network to Ease Traffic in Congested Peth Areas

15 Aug 2025

Pune’s municipal commissioner has expressed strong support for developing an underground road network in the city’s central areas to tackle the long-standing issue of traffic congestion. On Thursday, he visited the busy Kasba Peth assembly constituency, joined by the local MLA and the deputy commissioner of police, to personally assess the situation. The commissioner said that while underground roads form part of the city’s long-term mobility plan, short-term measures like removing footpath encroachments and completing pending roadworks will be prioritised. He assured that citizens would start seeing improvements within a year.

The idea of underground roads for the core city has also gained political momentum. Chief Minister has already voiced his support for such projects in the Peth areas, recognising the challenges posed by narrow roads and heavy daily traffic in this major business district. Union Minister had also planned to review the feasibility of an underground network last month but had to cancel his visit ironically due to traffic jams in the city centre.
