Dreams Shattered in Chikhali Families Left Homeless After PCMC Demolitions

18 May 2025

Tears flowed as, a 60-year-old migrant from Uttar Pradesh, watched the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) demolish his home in Chikhali on Saturday. His house was among 36 bungalows razed for being within the blue flood line of the Indrayani river. Earlier this year, his furniture shop in Kudalwadi was also demolished as part of the civic body's action against over 4,000 illegal structures. said he had invested his life savings of ₹35 lakh in the house. Several residents alleged they paid bribes ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh depending on the structure to avoid demolition and were granted utilities like water and electricity, making them believe their homes were legal.

Residents, some of whom are still paying EMIs, said they were misled by developers into believing the plots were in residential zones. Many were caught off-guard by the short notice from PCMC following a Supreme Court order. While the civic body insisted the demolitions were conducted under National Green Tribunal orders, commissioner said any bribe-related complaints would be investigated, and action would be taken if found valid. The sudden demolitions, amidst rainfall, left families unable to even salvage their belongings, with some now forced to seek shelter with relatives.
