The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has initiated a large-scale plan to replace its ageing bus fleet amid rising safety concerns across the state. Many of the corporation’s buses, especially in rural routes and smaller towns, are reported to be in poor condition, prompting an urgent need for modernization.
MSRTC aims to scrap 2,980 buses by the end of the 2026–27 financial year, with 1,859 set to be phased out this year alone. Of these, 1,184 have already been decommissioned. Around 2,800 new buses, including 300 electric models, have joined the fleet over the past few months. However, officials admit that achieving the target of 5,000 new additions by March 2026 may be challenging, given the pace of procurement.
