Pune Digs Deep for Water Security with 28 km Tunnel Project.

16 Oct 2025

Construction has officially begun on a 28-kilometre-long tunnel connecting Khadakwasla and Phursungi, marking a major milestone in Pune’s water infrastructure development. The Maharashtra Water Resources Department received clearance from the Central Environment Authority, allowing excavation and controlled blasting work to begin at Vadachi Wadi and Uruli Devachi. The tunnel is part of the new Mutha Right Bank Canal project, designed to replace the existing open canal that has suffered from encroachment, pollution, and silt deposits — reducing its water-carrying capacity over time.

The underground tunnel will help minimize water loss due to leakage, theft, and evaporation while ensuring efficient distribution to the city. A Hyderabad-based company has been awarded the contract, with a completion target of two and a half to three years. The 6.3-metre-diameter tunnel will feature cement concrete lining and modern stabilization techniques such as rock bolts and shotcrete. Around 150 skilled workers and engineers from across southern India are currently engaged on-site, as the project advances under strict quality and safety monitoring by the Water Resources Department.
