Flood-Hit Residents Demand Clear Red and Blue Line Marking on Mula-Mutha Riverbanks

22 Aug 2025

Recent flooding in areas near the Mula and Mutha river banks, including Ekta Nagari and Rajput slums in Bopodi, has once again raised serious concerns about the unclear marking of red and blue flood lines. Residents, many of whom purchased their homes decades ago with official permissions, now fear for the safety of their properties and accuse authorities of negligence. They argue that if flood lines had been properly defined in earlier years, builders would not have been able to sell flats in high-risk areas. Activists also blame poor planning, saying that no-development zones were wrongly converted into residential zones, leading to unplanned growth on riverbanks.

Citizens say they are paying the price for administrative lapses and the lack of coordination between civic bodies, the irrigation department, and the district administration. They demand clear solutions instead of vague promises, including proper surveys, floodline marking, and preventive measures against recurring floods. Environmentalists stress that multiple authorities managing the rivers without coordination is only worsening the crisis. A PMC committee that studied the 2024 floods has already suggested clear demarcation of floodlines, removal of debris, river restoration, and a strict ban on construction within danger zones. Residents now want urgent action so they are not left vulnerable every monsoon.
