Yerawada Katraj Tunnel A New Way to Cross Pune

07 Jan 2026

Pune traffic congestion has reached a structural limit as surface roads occupy only around 9 percent of the city’s total land area while vehicle numbers have crossed road capacity by more than two times. City planners have stated that widening existing roads is no longer viable in a land-constrained urban environment, leading to renewed focus on underground road connectivity as a long-term traffic management solution. A pre-feasibility report for an underground tunnel network has been completed, with officials confirming that the proposal has received a positive response at the state level.

The proposed Yerawada–Katraj twin tunnel is planned as a north–south underground corridor linking eastern and southern parts of Pune while bypassing heavily congested zones. The underground network is expected to connect key areas including Aundh, Baner, Kothrud, Pashan, Sinhagad Road, Sangamwadi, Khadki and Jagtap Dairy, and integrate with the inner ring road to improve highway access. Officials say the project could significantly reduce travel time by diverting through-traffic below ground, with further details on alignment, costs and execution timelines to be discussed after statutory approvals
