To ease traffic congestion at the busy Bindu Madhav Balasaheb Thackeray Chowk in Yerawada, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has floated a tender worth ₹115.73 crore for a new flyover and grade separator project. What sets this flyover apart is its single-span steel girder design meaning there will be no supporting pillar in the middle of Sangamwadi Chowk, allowing traffic to keep flowing even during construction. The project, which has a 30-month completion timeline, will start along the BRTS corridor, with side lanes kept open to avoid major disruptions. The grade separator, however, will be taken up later due to space limitations in the area.
Officials say this project is timely, given the rapid infrastructure expansion on Ahmednagar Road, including the upcoming elevated corridor from Vimannagar to Shirur, and the planned Shastrinagar flyover and metro extension toward Wagholi. These developments are expected to put added pressure on routes like Sangamwadi Chowk, which serves as a key junction connecting Yerawada, Deccan College, Sangamwadi, and Pune Airport. The flyover will cater to traffic moving from Deccan College to Yerawada, while the future grade separator will help streamline flow from Shivajinagar via Sangamwadi Road towards Airport Road and Bund Garden.
