Residents across Pune are voicing serious concerns over growing garbage mismanagement, pointing fingers at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for irregular waste collection and underperforming processing plants. The recent closure of the garbage ramp at the Kothrud depot now allotted for Pune Metro work has only worsened the situation. Citizens in Kothrud, Karve Road, and Paud Road report growing heaps of trash, while civic groups like Sajag Nagrik Manch (SNM) have urged the PMC to make all ramps and waste units fully operational. They allege that despite PMC’s claims of full waste treatment, visible piles across the city suggest serious lapses at the ground level.
Since the Kothrud ramp shut in May, 300 tonnes of garbage are being rerouted to other areas, stretching resources and reducing the number of daily collection trips. Local leaders and residents have criticized PMC’s poor planning, especially as other waste treatment plants like those in Hadapsar, Dhayari, and Sus are either shut or working below capacity. In peripheral and merged villages, where regular collection is already patchy, illegal roadside dumping is on the rise. Though PMC has deployed squads to monitor dumping, officials admit they can’t be everywhere and are now appealing to citizens to cooperate more actively in handing over their waste responsibly.
