Green Tribunal Directs Demolition of Illegal Structures on Indrayani River

06 Sep 2025

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has come down strongly on illegal encroachments along the Indrayani river in Lonavla, directing the local municipal council to demolish unauthorized structures built by a resident, Porwal, and recover ₹30 lakh from him for restoration expenses. Despite a 2020 NGT order later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2023 Porwal allegedly continued dumping soil and creating an illegal passage on survey no. 24, even rebuilding after demolitions and installing a gate leading to his bungalow. The tribunal noted that these actions obstructed the natural river flow and violated repeated warnings.

The Lonavla Municipal Council (LMC) informed the tribunal that it had already spent nearly ₹20 lakh on restoration and required an additional ₹10 lakh to complete the work. Acting on this, NGT ordered the recovery of ₹30 lakh from Porwal while also instructing Pune rural police to provide protection to municipal staff during demolition. LMC officials confirmed that action would be taken soon after Ganesh immersion, and pending cases against Porwal would be expedited. The tribunal further directed the construction of a protective wall along the main road at the site to ensure smooth river flow and prevent further obstructions.
