No Space to Walk, No Place to Park FC Road’s Footpath Turns into a Bazaar!

07 Oct 2025

The city’s bustling shopping stretches—Fergusson College (FC) Road and Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road—are once again crowded with hawkers who have taken over footpaths, leaving pedestrians with little room to walk. Despite repeated claims by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) of clearing illegal vendors, the problem has resurfaced, with residents alleging that only temporary actions are taken. On the other hand, hawkers’ unions argue that poor implementation of vending policies and lack of designated hawker zones are to blame for the chaos.

Civic officials maintain that anti-encroachment drives are being conducted regularly, but the shortage of staff and coordination gaps have limited the impact. With over 22,000 authorised hawkers and 38,000 applicants still awaiting regularisation, the situation highlights the need for better planning, fair vending zones, and strict enforcement. Meanwhile, residents complain of worsening traffic and lack of pedestrian space, urging PMC to balance livelihoods with public convenience.
