Pune’s future transport blueprint just got bigger and more ambitious. Maha Metro on Friday tabled the new Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the metropolitan region, outlining a massive expansion of public transport and road infrastructure. The plan recommends adding 312km of new Metro and Metro-Lite corridors beyond the current operational and under-construction lines, plugging 552km of missing road links in PMC and PCMC, and widening 438km of existing roads. To boost bus-based mobility, it proposes increasing the PMPML fleet to 4,000 buses, along with 80.5km of new Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) routes and 46.3km of High Frequency Bus Corridors. Covering an area of 2,250sqkm, the CMP also factors in connectivity to the proposed Purand arairport via Metro, Indian Railways, and road networks, at a total estimated cost of ₹1.33 lakh crore, to be implemented in phases until 2054.
The plan also puts a spotlight on green mobility, calling for hundreds of kilometres of footpaths and cycle tracks across PMC and PCMC, 16 pedestrian grade-separated crossings, and improved logistics infrastructure with new truck terminals, logistics hubs, and multi-modal transport hubs. Civic activists and transport experts have welcomed the CMP but stressed that implementation must start without delay, given that Pune’s traffic is already at breaking point. Officials said the proposals were presented before the chief minister and deputy CM, with the latter suggesting an extension of the proposed Hadapsar–Loni Metro line up to Uruli Kanchan to enhance regional connectivity.
