Big Boost for Connectivity or Missed Opportunity for Public Transport?

27 Sep 2025

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced a ₹628 crore project to widen the existing four-lane road into a six-lane, 50-km cement concrete stretch running parallel to the upcoming Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3. The plan covers road construction, utility shifting, beautification, electrification, and the addition of bus bays, cycle tracks, parking lanes, and pedestrian facilities. A consultant will be appointed to handle surveys, design, and execution, while tenders for the project have already been issued.

While the move is aimed at improving connectivity, civic activists have raised concerns about its effectiveness. They argue that spending such a large amount on a parallel road may only encourage more private vehicles, undermining the purpose of the Metro, which is to promote public transport. Critics also pointed out Pune’s history of delayed and poorly maintained road projects, warning that this could duplicate efforts without solving congestion issues.
