Hinjawadi Residents Demand Unified Governance to Tackle Civic Crisis

02 Jul 2025

Once a cluster of quiet villages, Hinjawadi has transformed into Pune’s premier IT hub, home to the sprawling Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park and thousands of professionals. But beneath this growth lies a growing frustration residents say the area’s broken roads, poor drainage, traffic chaos, and unreliable utilities are symptoms of a deeper problem: fragmented governance. Despite contributing massively to the local economy, Hinjawadi remains outside Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, with multiple agencies like MIDC, PMRDA, and Gram Panchayats dividing responsibilities and stalling development. Citizens now demand a unified civic body, a call that’s growing louder as the region struggles to keep pace with its own rapid urbanisation.

Although PCMC passed a resolution back in 2015 to include Hinjawadi and six surrounding villages, little progress has been made. Political leaders like MLAs Shankar Jagtap and Shrirang Barne support the merger, while residents voice concerns about worsening infrastructure and environmental neglect. Meanwhile, some villagers oppose the plan, citing fears of increased taxes and unresolved civic issues in already-merged areas. Still, public sentiment leans heavily towards integration, with hopes that inclusion under PCMC will finally bring much-needed coordination and accountability. As the state government weighs its decision, Hinjawadi stands at a tipping point caught between being an economic powerhouse and a civic afterthought.
