Bridge safety in Pune district has come under intense scrutiny after the district collector directed PMC, PCMC, PWD, Zilla Parishad, and irrigation authorities to submit action taken reports on unsafe bridges and culverts. The Pune bridge safety audit was ordered following the Kundmala bridge collapse over the Indrayani river, which exposed serious risks linked to ageing infrastructure and gaps in regular structural maintenance across urban and rural areas.
Official data from the Pune infrastructure safety review shows that over 500 bridges and public structures have been flagged as either needing urgent repairs or classified as dangerous. Pune disaster management authorities have warned that delays in bridge repair work could pose severe public safety risks, especially during monsoon conditions, and have instructed departments to immediately repair salvageable structures and demolish unsafe ones to prevent future accidents.
