Cantonment Governance Uncertainty Continues After MoD Tenure Extension

21 Jan 2026

Public dissatisfaction is rising across cantonment areas such as Pune, Khadki and Dehu Road after the Ministry of Defence extended the tenure of nominated members in 56 cantonment boards for another year. A gazette notification issued on January 19 confirmed the extension, leaving residents without elected representatives for the third consecutive year. Local Military Authority officials and cantonment administrators in Pune and Khadki said they have not received any clarity from the Centre regarding the schedule for long-pending cantonment elections.

Elected cantonment boards were dissolved nearly three years ago following proposed amendments to the Cantonment Act, after which civic administration has been handled by a chief executive officer, station commander and nominated members. Residents and activists said the lack of elected representation has affected civic services and denied nearly one lakh citizens their voting rights in municipal elections. Many pointed out that repeated announcements about restructuring or merging cantonments with municipal corporations have not translated into action, deepening concerns over governance and accountability in these areas.
