In a move to enforce traffic discipline through technology, Pune Police have installed three AI-enabled CCTV cameras on Fergusson College Road, which have already detected 1,450 violations since May 29. These smart cameras which operate 24x7 without any traffic personnel have issued automated challans for offences like parking in no-parking zones (1,100 cases), double parking (119), wrong-side driving (221), triple-seat riding (5), and talking on the phone while driving (5). Police Commissioner inaugurated the system on a pilot basis, and early reviews show that violations especially wrong-side driving and double parking have noticeably decreased.
Encouraged by the initial success, the traffic department now plans to extend this AI surveillance to other high-traffic zones such as JM Road and the Lohegaon Airport area. Meanwhile, the controversial towing van services in Pune have been suspended following public complaints. Officials said these vans will soon be upgraded with CCTV monitoring and newly assigned personnel to improve accountability and transparency before resuming operations. The traffic police are currently compiling data on fine collection and expect a detailed report in the coming days.
