110 Structures Razed for Wider Service Roads on Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway

13 Aug 2025

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday cleared 110 illegal structures along the service roads of the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-48) to make way for a long-awaited road widening project. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to double the width of these service roads from 12 meters to 24 meters after the monsoon. Officials confirmed that a 7 km stretch between the Pavana River Bridge and the Mula River Bridge has now been freed from encroachments, clearing a major hurdle for the project.

For years, commuters on this busy stretch have faced severe traffic jams and flooding during heavy rains. Authorities hope the wider roads will ease congestion and improve drainage. PCMC commissioner said that the encroachment removal was a crucial first step and that the project’s stormwater system had to be specially designed in coordination with NHAI. Gas pipeline work will also be completed during construction to prevent future road digging. The plan is to build the new road first, divert traffic onto it, and then reconstruct the old service road.
