Pune Chokes on Traffic Ranked 4th Worst Globally as Roads Fail to Keep Pace with Vehicles

16 Aug 2025

Once celebrated as the ‘Oxford of the East,’ Pune is now making headlines for all the wrong reasons ranking third in India and fourth globally for traffic congestion. With over 72 lakh registered vehicles in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and nearly three lakh more hitting the roads each year, the city’s infrastructure is crumbling under the pressure. Industrial zones, IT parks, and major highways funnel about 10 lakh vehicles daily through the city, leading to severe jams, bottlenecks, and rising accident rates. Shockingly, 80% of this traffic is squeezed onto just 265 kilometres of road, many of which are narrow, obstructed, and in poor condition. Average speeds have dropped to 22 km/h and are projected to fall to 16 km/h by 2026, meaning residents already lose around five full days each year stuck in traffic.

Despite spending ₹15,000 crore over the past decade on new roads and missing links, the Pune Municipal Corporation admits its efforts haven’t kept pace with the city’s explosive growth. Officials, along with traffic police and metro authorities, are now pressing the Chief Minister for urgent funding and policy changes. Proposed measures include 12 flyovers, new river bridges, railway underpasses, wider roads, and the long-overdue circular road network to divert pressure from the city’s core. Experts warn that without immediate upgrades to road width and quality, congestion will worsen, causing deeper economic, social, and environmental damage for Pune’s one crore residents a number expected to double in the next 20 years.
