PMC Begins Process to Restore Speed Barriers Across Major City Roads

31 Jan 2026

The Grand Tour cycling event in Pune was widely appreciated for its smooth execution, but it also drew criticism for infrastructure changes that appeared limited to the needs of the race. Following the event, the Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to reinstall around 200 speed breakers and rumble strips that were removed to ensure obstruction-free routes for cyclists. The refixing work is expected to begin next week, and civic officials have said raised pedestrian crossings will also be added at selected locations to improve road safety for walkers.

Over the past one and a half months, speed breakers were removed along nearly 75 kilometres of key city roads including JM Road, FC Road, Tilak Road, Bajirao Road, and University Road. After their removal, political representatives and residents raised safety concerns, particularly near schools and colleges. Civic officials clarified that the reinstallation was always planned after the event and that discussions with traffic police will determine suitable locations. PMC has also stated that roads resurfaced for the cycling event will face limited digging, with contractors responsible for maintaining road quality and commuters urging adherence to standard speed breaker norms.
