PMC Begins Phase 2 of Ganeshkhind Road Widening to Decongest Key Stretch

10 Jun 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is moving ahead with the second phase of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project this time focusing on the 2-kilometre stretch between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Sancheti Hospital. This initiative follows the successful completion of the first phase between Pune University Chowk and RBI, which was widened to support the construction of the Pune Metro Line 3 double-decker flyover. The road plays a vital role in linking major city points like Pune University, Shivajinagar, and Pune railway station. The widening work is expected to ease the heavy traffic congestion that currently plagues the route.

To execute this phase, PMC needs land from 52 properties along the corridor, and so far, 12 property holders have already handed over the required land. The remaining properties include key institutions like the Agriculture College, police headquarters, CoEP hostel, and Hardikar Hospital. PMC’s land and estate department is actively negotiating with both public and private property owners to acquire the necessary land. The widening project will cost an estimated ₹58 crore, excluding land acquisition expenses. Once complete, the upgraded road will complement the ongoing double-decker flyover project by PMRDA, enhancing connectivity and commuter experience across this crucial corridor.
