The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority has instructed its consultants to evaluate six to seven alignment options for the proposed ₹32,000-crore underground tunnel road network before finalising the detailed project report (DPR). The directive was issued during the 19th review meeting of the Pune Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority, where officials stressed that such a high-value project must offer maximum public benefit. Initially conceived as a 54-km north–south corridor connecting Yerawada and Katraj, the project may now be reworked to include additional congestion-prone stretches and possible east–west connectivity.
Officials said the revised alignments must be backed by detailed origin-destination studies, third-party mobility data and robust traffic projections to ensure meaningful congestion reduction across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The underground road concept, often referred to as the “paatal lok” model, is being viewed as a long-term response to surface-level saturation. Representatives from Maha Metro, Pune Municipal Corporation and other state agencies highlighted the need to integrate tunnel exits with parking policies for smooth traffic dispersal. Final costs, funding patterns and execution timelines will be determined after the revised feasibility report is reviewed.
