Nearly 90% of the 14,000 hectares of disputed reserve forest land in Pune district is currently being used for agriculture and allied activities such as poultry, dairies, and cowsheds, according to forest department records. These lands, mostly located in Daund, Indapur, Wadgaon Maval, and Baramati, have been at the center of an ownership dispute between the forest and revenue departments for decades. The issue stems from unclear documentation following a 1978 directive by the central government to transfer certain forest lands to the revenue department. This ambiguity allowed for large-scale encroachments, as many families have lived on and cultivated these lands for generations.
Following a recent Supreme Court ruling, the Pune forest department is now moving to reclaim the disputed lands. Since 2008, over 22,000 hectares have already been retrieved from the revenue department, but 14,000 hectares remain under dispute. Deputy Conservator of Forests stated that reclaiming efforts will now extend to urban areas, including a key 153-hectare land parcel in Dighi under the defence department. The Pune district administration, led by Collector , has requested detailed data from the forest department and has committed to taking further action based on the apex court’s directives.
