Mumbai–Pune Travel Time to Drop to 90 Minutes With New Expressway

15 Dec 2025

The Mumbai Pune travel time is expected to reduce to 90 minutes after the completion of major highway and expressway projects announced by the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. At present, the Mumbai Pune corridor takes nearly two and a half to three hours due to traffic congestion and bottlenecks in the ghat sections, affecting daily commuters and frequent travellers. The government stated that ongoing Maharashtra highway infrastructure projects will significantly improve Mumbai Pune road connectivity and make same day travel practical for professionals, business users, and government officials.

A key component of the Mumbai Pune expressway expansion is a proposed 130 kilometre greenfield express highway connecting Atal Setu, JNPT Chowk, and the Pune Shivapur junction, which is expected to reduce congestion on existing routes and improve access to southern Maharashtra. In Pune district alone, road infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹50,000 crore have been sanctioned, including elevated corridors such as the Talegaon Chakan Shikrapur four tier transport corridor and the Hadapsar Yavat elevated road on the Pune Solapur route. Officials said these projects are aimed at improving traffic flow, road safety, and fuel efficiency while supporting long term intercity and regional connectivity
