The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has extended the deadline for property tax payments at discounted rates until June 30, providing relief to residents. Typically, taxpayers who clear their dues before May 31 receive a 5% to 10% discount. However, this year, the extension was granted due to expected delays in bill distribution caused by recalculations of the 40% tax discount. With around 12.5 lakh properties under PMC’s jurisdiction, nearly half of the residents pay their taxes before the usual deadline, generating approximately ₹1,000 crore in the first quarter of the financial year. The civic body has also reinstated the 40% tax discount for self-occupied properties, a benefit that was initially introduced in 1970, removed in 2018-19, and then restored in 2022-23 following public demand.
PMC officials assured that taxpayers would not be penalized for delayed bill distribution, and those who pay by the new June-end deadline will still qualify for the discount. The decision was approved by the PMC commissioner and administrator. However, activists have raised concerns about the complexity of tax bills, urging the civic body to simplify them. They suggested that bills should clearly indicate whether the 40% discount has been applied and display both discounted and non-discounted amounts to avoid confusion among taxpayers.
