Pimpri Chinchwad Shifts Focus to Revenue Growth to Fund New Projects

26 Mar 2026

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has officially cleared a massive ₹9,332.17 crore annual budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year following a marathon 12-hour debate that concluded at midnight. The final outlay reflects an increase of ₹414 crore from the initial draft, incorporating over 1,100 suggestions from newly elected corporators. During the session, representatives from across the political spectrum raised serious concerns regarding the city’s financial health, pointing to a shift from holding ₹4,844 crore in fixed deposits in 2016 to facing current liabilities of nearly ₹7,000 crore. These figures, highlighted during the recent green bond issuance on the Bombay Stock Exchange, prompted demands for a thorough inquiry into the fiscal management during the preceding period of administrative rule.

To stabilize the city's finances, the budget places a heavy emphasis on revitalizing revenue streams, particularly through the building permission department. Officials expect revenue from construction approvals to hit the ₹1,000 crore mark this year, aided by the resolution of long-standing environmental and land measurement hurdles. On the infrastructure front, the budget allocates ₹40 crore for the long-delayed Pavana closed pipeline project and lists several other ambitious works totaling ₹140 crore. While some of these projects are still awaiting full financial arrangements, their inclusion in the budget allows the administration to move toward execution as soon as funds are secured. The house also emphasized the urgent need to enhance revenue from water supply to ensure long-term sustainability.
