NHAI Submits ₹6090 Crore Plan for Jambhulwadi to Dehu Road Elevated Highway
The proposed 32-km elevated corridor on NH-48 is set to become the definitive solution for one of Pune’s most notorious traffic blackspots. Spanning from Swaminarayan Mandir in Jambhulwadi to the Dehu Road junction, this ₹6,090 crore project specifically targets the accident-prone Navale Bridge stretch, where brake failures and heavy congestion have claimed numerous lives over the last five years. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials have confirmed that the detailed project report is currently awaiting final clearance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). While short-term measures like rumble strips and reduced speed limits are currently in place, the state government maintains that this elevated highway is the only way to separate local transit from heavy long-distance haulage.
Once approved, the high-tech corridor is expected to revolutionize travel across the western periphery of the city, including the high-traffic Wakad to Dehu Road section. The design aims to facilitate an uninterrupted traffic flow with average speeds reaching 80 km/h, potentially slashing travel times by up to 40%. Beyond safety and speed, the project is projected to significantly lower vehicle operating costs and carbon emissions by eliminating the constant stop-and-go traffic currently seen at major junctions. High-level coordination meetings are already underway to streamline encroachment removals along the proposed alignment, ensuring that groundwork can commence immediately following the central government’s green light.
