Mumbai Pune Expressway Missing Link to Open on Maharashtra Day

24 Apr 2026

The long-awaited 13.3 km Missing Link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is set for a historic inauguration by the Chief Minister on May 1, 2026 (Maharashtra Day). This engineering marvel is designed to bypass the treacherous Bhor Ghat, effectively shortening the travel distance by 6 km and slashing commute times by at least 30 minutes. In a strategic move to ensure safety, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced that for the first six months, the stretch will be exclusive to cars and buses. Heavy vehicles and those carrying hazardous materials will continue to use the existing ghat section to prevent congestion and accidents, with a potential review for goods vehicles scheduled after the monsoon.

The project stands as one of India's most complex infrastructure feats, featuring a 650-metre cable-stayed bridge in Tiger Valley suspended 180 metres high, and two massive tunnels one of which, at 8.9 km, is slated to be the longest in Asia. Utilizing advanced "jump formwork" technology for bridge pylons and controlled blasting for the tunnels, the MSRDC achieved a record-breaking tunnel width of 23.5 metres, which is expected to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Despite delays caused by the pandemic and global supply chain issues, over 1,000 workers are currently finishing the final touches to deliver this toll-free, high-speed corridor that promises to redefine travel between Maharashtra's two largest hubs.
