PCMC Slaps Rs.70000 Fine on 12 Housing Societies for Untreated Sewage Discharge

25 Apr 2026

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has intensified its crackdown on environmental violations, collecting ₹70,000 in fines from private sewage treatment plants (STPs) in a targeted enforcement drive. Conducted between April 17 and April 22, 2026, the inspection covered 21 private STPs across the city. While nine facilities were found to be fully compliant, 12 STPs were caught discharging untreated or partially treated wastewater into the environment. The Environmental Engineering Department, supported by the municipal nuisance detection squad, initiated the penalties to curb the rising levels of local water pollution.

Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh has issued a stern warning to housing societies and commercial establishments, stating that releasing untreated sewage despite having functional infrastructure is a "serious violation." The civic body has mandated that all such facilities must not only operationalize their STPs immediately but also begin reusing the treated water. Failure to comply with these regulations could lead to the disconnection of water supply lines and further administrative action. This move is part of a broader push to ensure sustainable water recycling and prevent the contamination of local water bodies during the peak summer months.
