Construction Starts on Vanaz to Chandni Chowk Metro Extension

23 Apr 2026

The much-awaited expansion of Pune Metro's Line 2 has officially moved from paper to pavement as groundwork begins on the 1.5-km elevated extension from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk. This critical link will feature two new stations Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk effectively connecting the city's western gateway to the rest of the Metro network. Initial works, including soil testing and topographical surveys, have already commenced near the Chandni Chowk interchange. To ensure commuter safety at this high-traffic junction, Maha Metro is prioritizing the design of a specialized Foot Overbridge (FOB), which will allow residents from Bavdhan and nearby areas to access the station safely from the main highway.

In addition to the Metro viaduct, the project includes an integrated flyover near the Kothrud Depot area to further ease local traffic congestion. Maha Metro has appointed a construction agency and is working in close coordination with the Pune Traffic Police to manage barricading in phases, aiming to keep maximum road width available for vehicles during construction. For residents of Bavdhan and Kothrud, this extension addresses a long-standing grievance, eliminating the need for short-distance commutes by bike or rickshaw just to reach the current terminus at Vanaz.
