The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee has officially approved a new flyover at Mahatma Phule Chowk, providing long-awaited relief to the gridlocked corridors of Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, Hadapsar, and Manjari. This decision follows two years of intense public agitation and a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by residents frustrated by the perennial bottlenecks at the intersection of the Solapur Highway and the Hadapsar-Kharadi Bypass. With traffic volumes surging due to the high density of IT hubs in Magarpatta and Kharadi, the new flyover is designed to streamline the heavy transit of commuters moving from Ghorpadi and Koregaon Park toward the eastern suburbs.
In addition to the flyover, the PMC has sanctioned a unified 24-meter bridge near Sasanenagar to replace three outdated, multi-level structures over the canal that have become safety hazards. This unified bridge aims to eliminate the steep, accident-prone gradients that currently plague the main road connecting the Pune Peth areas to Sasanenagar. While the road department has already issued work orders for some of these reconstructions, civic officials have emphasized that the general body's approval and the subsequent tendering process will be fast-tracked to ensure construction begins alongside the development of alternative routes to minimize further commuter distress.
