Massive 53km Multi Level Corridor Cleared for Pune Industrial Belt

29 Mar 2026

The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Committee has officially greenlit the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur elevated highway on NH 548D, a project designed to decongest one of India’s most critical automobile hubs. Chaired by the Chief Minister, the meeting prioritized this 53.2-km corridor to separate heavy industrial freight from local commuter traffic, which has long paralyzed the Chakan MIDC area. The approved plan features a sophisticated multi-level design for the Talegaon–Chakan stretch, consisting of a four-lane elevated corridor built directly above a four-lane at-grade road. Meanwhile, the Chakan–Shikrapur section will be upgraded to a high-capacity four-lane highway under the DFBOT (Design, Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer) model, providing a seamless link between NH-48 and the Pune–Shirur corridor.

While the approval marks a major milestone for the "Traffic Free Chakan" initiative, local action committees remain cautious regarding the actual commencement of work. Although the project is slated for completion by 2030—roughly four years after the work order is issued—no specific date for the tender finalization has been set. Citizen groups have also flagged the frequent transfer of key officials, such as the PMRDA commissioner, as a potential hurdle to the inter-departmental coordination required to acquire the necessary 56 hectares of land. Despite these administrative concerns, the MSIDC is moving forward with the mandate to streamline logistics for the region's manufacturing giants, aiming to significantly reduce vehicle operating costs and transit times across the industrial belt.
